VIENNA INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

Eligibility:
The competition is open to all nationalities. Age limits, as of August 19, 2010, for all divisions are imposed as follows:

Division A: 8 - 12 years
Division B: 13 - 17 years
Division C: at least 18 years

Application fee (free of charge):
Division A: Euro 90.00
Division B: Euro 100.00
Division C: Euro 100.00

Application deadline:
July 9, 2010 (Applications must be received by this date to be considered.)

Application procedure:

  1. Pianists wishing to participate in the competition are advised to download and fill out the application form. To view and print out the form, click here. (You will need to have Acrobat Reader installed on you computer to be able to view the form. If your computer is not eqipped with this software, click here to download it for free.)

  2. Send the application fee by international bank wire transfer to the following address:

  3. Send the application form plus proof of payment and proof of age to Panmusica Austria. Please allow two weeks to receive a confirmation letter/e-mail.

Repertoire:
Division A

Preliminary: One or more works of the Viennese classical period. The total duration of the program has to be at least 6 but must not exceed 8 minutes.
Final round: One or several works by Frédéric Chopin or Robert Schumann. The total duration of the program has to be at least 8 but must not exceed 12 minutes.

Division B

Preliminary: A sonata of the Viennese classical period.
Semifinal round: Impromptu No. 1, 2, or 3 by Frédéric Chopin and Rhapsody op. 79, No. 1 or No. 2 by Johannes Brahms.
Final round: Free choice of repertoire. The total duration of the program has to be at least 12 but must not exceed 15 minutes.

Division C

Preliminary: A sonata of the Viennese classical period.
Semifinal round: First movement of Sonata in a minor, D 784 or Sonata in a minor, D 845 by Franz Schubert and Nocturne op. 27, No. 1, or op. 32, No. 2 by Frédéric Chopin.
Final round: Free choice of repertoire. The total duration of the program has to be at least 18 but must not exceed 25 minutes.

Prizes:
The best three contestants will receive a gift and a certificate of recognition.
All finalists will receive a diploma.
First prize, division C: Euro 500.00 plus an honorary award by the Mayor of the City of Vienna and a recital at the Palais Lobkowitz Eroica Hall.
A special prize for a finalist of division A or B, sponsored by Ms. Imola Jóo, will be awarded.
During the semifinal round of division C, a special prize for the best interpretation of a work by Schubert will be awarded.
The prizes will be awarded after the final round.

Details:
The term "Viennese classical period" comprises works by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
All works played during the competition are to be performed only once and without repeats.
Changes of repertoire must be submitted prior to the application deadline.
